The Knick

Title design & show package for Cinemax’s drama series about a NY Hospital and its doctors at the turn of the twentieth century. Our branding visualizes the show’s themes of innovation and modernization in a corrupt and segregated society.

This is a group project I did with Lexie Redd and Taylor English for Network Branding class at SCAD in Fall 2014. After viewing and researching the show two things became very clear. The time period was set in a revolution of change in every facet of life, socially, medically, industrially, politically and more. Because of this there are many instances of vivid contrast in lifestyles, perspectives and environment, almost to the point of contradiction. These two factors stuck with us and influenced how we approached our concept. We decided to depict these ideas through a variety of techniques drawn from chemistry and medical textbooks. Mysterious black liquids oozing through tubes, liquids spreading and mixing together and parts of the anatomy submerged in white substances will all work together to grasp the tone of the series, abstracting towards the key themes, while remaining a modern graphic treatment.
